Atal Bamboo Samruddhi Scheme
Bamboo is a versatile forest product and is called “green gold” because of its economic importance. Bamboo is the “timber of the poor” as it is an easily available and affordable forest product to meet the needs of human wood.
It is also called. Bamboo is a fast growing, evergreen and long lasting species. Bamboo cultivation has the potential to provide economic security to the farmers.
The market for bamboo in the country is around Rs. 26,000 crore which includes bamboo furniture, bamboo pulp, bamboo mat board, cartridge industries, ply board etc. Bamboo also has unlimited potential to overcome global warming by absorbing carbon at high speeds. Taking all these factors into consideration, the Central Government has launched the National Bamboo Mission to ensure proper development of bamboo and to make full use of the potential of bamboo for the economic and social development of the poor and for the development of the entire country.
(National Bamboo Mission) has been established.
Bamboo cultivation will improve the economic condition of the mourners and help in raising their standard of living. For this, farmers need to be provided with good bamboo seedlings.
At present bamboo tissue culture plants are available from states outside Maharashtra. A scheme to produce high quality berry seedlings in the state and make them available to the farmers at a discounted rate for cultivation on land and on farm dams on 27th June.
Approval has been given in the cabinet meeting on 2019. In line with this recognition, the government was considering launching a new scheme to supply tissue culture bamboo seedlings to farmers at a discounted rate.
Ruling: –
शासना The government is approving the implementation of a new scheme called “Atal Bamboo Samrudhi Yojana” to supply tissue culture bamboo seedlings at concessional rates to farmers for planting bamboo on agricultural land as well as on show dams.
Objectives of Atal Bamboo Samrudhi Yojana: –
1. To supply tissue culture bamboo seedlings to the farmers.
2. To supplement the income from agriculture, increase the area under bamboo cultivation on the land.
3. Bamboo cultivation will help the farmers to make a living and improve the economic condition of the Hotaks and help them to raise their standard of living.
Tissue Culture Bamboo Plants Needed: –
1. According to the characteristic of bamboo, bamboo dies when it blooms. Bamboo flora falls into the following two trends.
2. A) Sporadic flowering: –
It does not have all the bamboo flowers in a row in the bamboo area but a few selected bamboos come in rare places.
B) gregorius flowering –
It contains all the bamboo flowers in a row in the bamboo field.
Since the life cycle of bamboo is 40 to 100 years, its seeds are not available on time. Also the place and duration of gregorius flowering is not fixed. Therefore, it is not possible to produce the species from these seeds commercially.
● Germination of bamboo seeds is very low and its viability is only 3 to 6 months. Due to this uncertainty, bamboo seedlings are made by bamboo grafting (Vegetative Propagation). Tissue culture bamboo seedlings are a great option for maintaining the quality of good bamboo seedlings and species purity and for producing large quantities of bamboo seedlings.
● If farmers do not know the species after purchasing bamboo seedlings from other nurseries available in the market and planting them in the field, they will not get the expected yield from that species after 5 years of hard work. This will cause a lot of loss to the farmers. The main objective of bamboo development is to provide purity and identification of species. This objective can be achieved by providing tissue culture bamboo seedlings to the farmers.
Species for tissue culture bamboo seedlings: –
● In Maharashtra, Dendrocalamus strictus, Katang (Bambusa bambusa) are found in Vidarbha region and Manga (Oxytenenthara stocksii) is found in large numbers in Konkan region. In addition to the above 3 endemic species, the following 5 species have been selected in consultation with experts who have been working in the bamboo field for many years: –
1) Bambusa balcooa
2) Dendrocalamus brandisii
3) Bambusa nutan
4) Dendrocalamus asper
5) Bambusa tulda
According to the commercial approach of the National Bamboo Campaign, the first 4 large bamboos out of 5 cultivable species are suitable for farmers and biomass will be available from them in a good way. Bambusa tulda is a species suitable for agarbatti and other handicraft work.

Benefits / Features of Bamboo Cultivation –
● Bamboo cultivation will also benefit both soil erosion and water conservation.
● The above mentioned features will provide sustainable support and economic security to the farmers. In addition, bamboo has the capacity to produce 26 value-added products from bamboo shoots to leaves. E.g. From bamboo shoots, pickles, vegetables, wood, curtains, furniture, incense sticks, textiles, energy (CNG, Ethanol, Charcoal) etc. It is in the interest of the farmers and the environment to encourage them to cultivate large quantities of bamboo in the field for the availability of raw material of bamboo.
Efforts will be made through Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board to provide market to the farmers for the products produced from bamboo.
Rate of Tissue Culture Bamboo Plants: –
Tissue culture bamboo seedlings cost about Rs. 25 / – per plant. Farmers will buy bamboo seedlings in advance and plant them on the land. After the inspection of bamboo cultivation on the land, the government will deposit 80 per cent of the price of bamboo saplings directly to the land holders of 4 hectares or below and 50 per cent subsidy to the land holders who have more than 4 hectares. Also, the farmers have to bear the cost of the remaining bamboo seedlings at the rate of 20 and 50 per cent respectively.
Selection of Beneficiaries for Atal Bamboo Scheme: –
The following criteria are being fixed for selection of beneficiaries: –
Method of implementation of Atal Bamboo Samrudhi Yojana: –
